Play that track

Last year, a friend and I were comparing some notes on what we had been listening to lately. He mentioned Jamie T and it took me a while to get into his not quite singing, not quite rapping tunes but damn...I can't seem to get enough these days. Plus, his website is hot.

Peter Bjorn & John - Object of My Affection

OK, seriously, what's up with indie bands busting out the cryptic videos as of late? First Klaxons zoom around the galaxy light-sabering the shit out of giant plexiglass condoms, then Grizzly Bear build a gigantic wooden meat-packing machine in the desert while a dude in prosthetics head-fucks a mountain-woman, and now this?

OK, we love Swedish indie pop trio Peter Bjorn and John, who have decided to release the best track that isn't "Young Folks" off of their debut album Writer's Block: "Object of My Affection" which, while sharing the name of a mediocre Jennifer Aniston movie, still manages to be a completely uplifting slice of good old rock/pop. The first thing that struck us was that essentially, this video has been made before, though perhaps not as stylishly, and with absolutely horrendous hair. The second thing we noticed was whoa, we watch way too many music videos. And the the third was that drummer John is a serious fox, even if all he does is play a kick and stare wistfully at his bandmate flailing about in the existential void--or something.

OH SHIT WE'RE ABOUT TO ASK YOU A QUESTION!

What do you think about this emerging trend of indie bands going all Camus on our asses? Leave us a comment and let us know! We've always thought the old "performance video" trick was a total bore, so it'll be interesting to see what, oh we don't know, Franz Ferdinand will come up with next. Battling mutant chickens in the streets of Manchester, we hope!

London Calling

'Ello guv'nors (???)! CEC is going on vacation to London for a week starting tomorrow. KKH will be holding down the fort in his absence, so expect more indie and less, um, British top 40 and Panic! at the Disco. CEC's really excited to see Hot Fuzz does that make him a geek? Oh, and watch the first episode fo Skins, which looks like a cross between Footballer's Wives and a British version of the O.C.. It's pretty bad, in watchable sort of way.

CEC will be back on March 6th. Until then, play nice.

It Came From WTF: Panic! at Sports Illustrated

We've never picked up an issue of Sports Illustrated in our lives, except maybe to be mentally scarred as children. The magazine exists completely outside of our cultural realm, but the fact that the latest issues combines both the tragically un-hip Music and the compulsory Swinsuit Issues, we kind of had to take a deep breath and check it out. At least 90% of the magazine is truly abominable, full of models we've never seen and artist we've never listened to (see: Kenny Chesney), but a certain photoshoot caught our eye, then our heart, then weaseled its way into our minds and chewed its way back out.

It fascinates us that somewhere, someone thought this was a good idea--four asexual post-teens wearing more make-up than model Julie Henderson--and yet, we can't stop looking at it. We fucking love Panic! (whatever) and if there was ever a band created for such a retarded premise as a music and swimsuits issue, they're it. It would kind of made more sense if the musicians were the swimsuit models, but obviously logic isn't Sports Illustrated's forte, it would seem. Then again half naked Panics probably wouldn't appeal to their target demo: as Steve Coogan says in 24 Hour Party People, "That reminds me, I must pick up some chicken drumsticks on the way home."

Check out more photos over at So More Scene.

OK Alice and Ethin. You guys know we love you. And when you love someone, sometimes you have to be tough. SERIOUSLY, GET IT TOGETHER. It's just some Moogs and a bass guitar, how hard can it be? Get your visas or whatever sorted out and play some goddamn shows!

The Second Coming of Maximo Park

We've always been of the opinion that Maximo Park got the short end of the mid-2000s-Brit-pop-revival-stick, kind of like the Pulp to Kasabian's Oasis or the Kasier Chief's Blur. They are far superior musicians, and yet somehow it all went over people's heads. Sure, they were a bit heady, and although we thoroughly enjoy 2005's A Certain Trigger to this day, something just didn't click with the greater public. We mean, we're sure the album did well, but it seems to us that the 'Park should have gotten way more succesful than they did.

It looks like all that is about to change though.

Holy. Shit. Maximo Park's new single, "Our Veloicty", is greater than anything on the pervious record, and if even half of their upcoming album Our Earthly Pleasures is this impressive, we're in for a real treat. We've watched this video as many times as possible since we got a hold of it last week, and we still get a kick out of the death stare Paul gives the camera at the end. Hold up:

LOL! Seriously though, we get chills every time that damn keyboard-driven chorus kicks in near the two-minute mark. So amazing.

Here's an MP3 for your troubles.

Maximo Park - Our Velocity

We also interviewed Paul way back in 2005 (Jesus) when Maximo played Tonic. Here's a link.

Our Earthly Pleasures drops in April on the never-ceases-to-amaze-us Warp Records. Be sure to cop that shit!

Friday Fun!!

This Friday marks the 2nd edition of the new dance party at Studio B, FUN with resident DJs Eamon Harkin (Calling All Kids) and the Bangers. In the snowfilled streets of Greenpoint, Brooklyn the kids will be celebrating the launch party of Throne of Blood with many special guests: James F!#$%^ Friedman, Max Pask, Max Wowch, the Wiz and the boys of the Rapture who will also be playing a special mini electronic set. Does it get any better than this?

The Disconappers will be here supporting our friends and dancing the night away cause that's how we roll! Hope you can make it out.

Studio B is at 259 Banker St between Meserole and Calyer.

This shit is heavy like it weighs a ton

Remember Robyn? The Swedish girl with the platinum blond combdown who made a splash a decade ago with "Show Me Love"? It's no secret that she's been back in the scene and recording for a while, but her new video came out a few days ago and frankly, we find ourselves obliged to represent:

UM, OMG. Was that not the most awesome 3:04 minutes of your life? We thought so. Brilliantly, the song is called "Konichiwa Bitches" and is a strong early contender for Song of the Year, even though it's been kicking around the Internet for the past century or so.

Check out these links for more Robynsanity:
1. The "Show Me Love" video, which 10 years down the line, isn't as bad as we remember it to be. It's actually a pretty decent pop song. Who'd have thought!
2. Robyn's MySpace profile
3. A Robyn interview at popjustice.
4. Her official site (didn't realize people still did those).

WAIT! BONUS!

A fan recorded Robyn performing "Konichiwa Bitches" somewhere in the UK, and it sounds quite "new rave". PERHAPS KLAXONS WERE LISTENING.

It's your party but I'll die if I want to

Seven-headed Welsh indie-pop troupe Los Camepsinos! have apparently signed to Wichita Recordings (home to DN faves The Cribs), and released a video for their first single, "We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives", a moderate hit on our iTunes since summer 2006.

Now wasn't that lovely? No US dates confirmed for the moment, but there is a suspicious void on their tour itinerary during SXSW-time, so who knows?

Lil' Mama - Lipgloss

Seventeen-year-old Lil' Mama is a new bubblegum hip-hop artist (you know they exist) currently being flogged by Jive Records, but unlike anything that has ever been flogged by Jive Records, her promo single "Lipgloss" is surprisingly good. It's cute, simple, catchy and fun--a sort of anti-"Fergalicious", if you will. It's completely acapella except for some handclaps and drum machine percussion, making whoever the hell produced this kind of a genius. Wait for the bit where she gets called into the principal's office because they just have to know where she got her lipgloss from. It's like if Molly Ringwald's character in The Breakfast Club was black and got transported to PS 180 circa 2007.

Lil' Mama - Lipgloss

WE APPROVE.

Magazines cover him, blogs don't mind him either...

At first when we heard Mika's single, "Grace Kelly", it bordered between super infectious and super annoying. Does anyone approve of his Freddie Mercury impersonation throughout the song? Hmmm...maybe that's what makes you want to listen to the song again. It's definitely something that grows on you. With a major label debut from Universal, we're sure this song will be featured in the next big carbonated beverage ad or used in the background for a Bravo television show. Judge for yourself, peep the vid below:

Unklejam - Love Ya

The first thing we noticed about UK R&B trio Unklejam was that they had made the age-old fatal error of replacing the letter "C" with the letter "K" in their name. The second thing we noticed was that they looked like members of N.E.R.D. with Cameo fetishes and an extensive Prince collection--and we were like: "OK, we can deal with the C to K thing for a while. This is kind of sick." Their first single is called "Love Ya" and I'm sure the Purple One would approve from his gilted castle in the sky (or wherever):

THAT WAS AWESOME. It's 1991, we're watching Inspector Gadget, and our moms won't let us get jherri curls. There a pretty neat remix by Herve making the rounds on the Internet at the moment also. Cold. Check. It.

It Came From WTF: Scissor Sisters on Passions

OK. It's been a tumultuous ride between DN and the Scissor Sisters. When they first came onto the scene in like, 2002, we (very stupidly) wrote them off as just another hipster rip-off troupe who wore too much make-up and played Luxx way too often (remember, this was during the height of electroclash/NYC douchebaggery, and our Fuck You Alert System was permanently set to red). Then of course, Scissor Sisters came out, and we kicked ourselves for not going to see them play 40,000 times when we had the chance, and were reduced to groveling at the feet of their publicist like every other two-bit hack in town. Oh, the horror! We learnt our lesson.

Flash-forward to last fall, Ta-Dah is released, and we buy it (BUY IT) on street date (ON STREET DATE) and get a poster with our purchase (A GLOW-IN-THE DARK BLACK VELVET POSTER, WHICH IS AT A FRIEND'S HOUSE RIGHT NOW BECAUSE WE DIDN'T WANT TO CARRY IT BUT WE HAVE ONE REGARDLESS). Now if that's not fandom then we don't know what is. Let's be honest, many of the songs on Ta-Dah kind of suck (thanks Elton) but "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" and "Kissin' You Off" etc were pretty amazing.

But nothing prepared us for this.

Or for that matter this.

We've never watched an episode of Passions (having something vaguely resembling a life), but when we first heard that our beloved Sisters were doing an on-air soap opera performance, we somehow conned ourselves into believing that they would use this opportunity to reinsert their campy tongue-in-cheekness that had been a little sobered up (OK, relatively) on Ta-Dah, and not to, you know, shamelessly flog their flopping CD to the culturally untamed populations of Middle America. We were wrong.

This is the sound of desperation. Pure and unfiltered. It saddens us that a band once so fun and kind of revolutionary, when you really think about it, squandered their unique chance to REALLY infiltrate the American mainstream and make pop culture history, just to pander to a demographic that could seriously give a shit. They're named after a lesbian sex act, for Christsakes! Did the Sex Pistos go on Coronation Street for some hussy to play their album in 1977? No, they went on The Today Show and fucked shit up. We mean, where was Babydaddy making it with some closeted gynecologist character or something?

It's time to go home, listen to "Monkey Baby" on repeat and remember better days. :(

Grizzly Bear - Knife

We truly think Grizzly Bear are the best American band of the last deacde, and not just because we've followed their rise to international success since they were little baby cubs. They're innovative, majestic, clever and extremely talented. Their flagship single "Knife" was one of our favorite tracks of last year, and their long-awaited video has finally been released!

So awesome. Don't forget to catch them on their upcoming tour! Shit's almost sold out yo!

Stop being a dickhead.

OK, we definitely like Kate Nash more than Lily Allen now. This demo is awesome, it's like she's reading our fucking minds or something. "What you gotta be a dickhead for?/Stop being such a dickhead". STOLE THE WORDS OUT OUR MOUTHS GIRLFRIEND.

Kate Nash - "Dickhead"

Look at how cute she is! This demo is very, very raw, BUT it shows she has a lot of potential: a proper producer and money (which we're sure Moshi will provide), and this could be our favorite record of its genre since Regina Spektor dropped Begin to Hope.

WE APPROVE.

Well, whatever, this song is probably better than Ash's upcoming album so, rejoice.

Lucy and the Caterpillar or Girls Are Nice, Part Two

In addition to Kate Nash (who's single just got panned by the NME--whatever, we like it), we're also head-over-heels in love with with chirpy-voiced Mancunian 18-year-old singer-songwriter Lucy and the Caterpillar. The video for her debut single "Red Red Wine"* is up on YouTube. We know, who would have thought.

So '90s! It looks like something that would be on MTV really late at night when we were in the 6th grade. It's kind of like a pre-children/crazy Liz Phair or something... not as lyrically deft, but who knows what an album might bring. Stream some more songs on Lucy's myspace page.

*Not a UB40 cover, sadly

Kate Nash or Girls Are Nice, Part One

We're really into acoustic singy-songy girls right now (Regina Spektor's album was #20 in the Billboard charts this week! How awesome!) and Kate Nash is definitely going places in that category. Recently signed to Moshi Moshi (WE. KNOW.), she's just released her debut single, "Caroline's a Victim" and is playing shows with Tilly & The Wall in the U.K. Here's the "Caroline's" video.

From what we understand, most of her songs don't really sound like that though, they've more of a "not-shit-Alanis-Morisette" feel to them. In a rather BIZARRE* twist of fate, Kate Nash is only two letters away from our favorite Kate of all time (that would be Kate Bush, people who don't know us), and seems like she might be approximately 25% as awesome as Kate Bush, which is respectable since most people hover in the 5-to-10 percentile.

This is what she sounds like regularly:

Kate Nash - "Birds (Live)"

So that's that then.

M.I.A. - Bird Flu

Question: is the following video the new M.I.A. single...

...or a long lost Ms. Peachez masterpiece?

You be the judge.

Quite frankly we kind of like the new M.I.A. single, even though it seems to be dividing opinion. Apparently, M.I.A. called the track "Bird Flu" because "It's going to kill everyone": how precious. Then again, I'm sure the same could be said about Ms. Peachez's fried drumsticks.

"Golden Skans": THE LOST EDIT

We've all seen the brilliant video for "Golden Skans" by Klaxons, directed by white-hot London visual artist Saam Faramand (who, in a not-so-bizarre twist of events, admitted in the NME to ripping off the "Feel It" video in a respectable manner). Anyway, someone just released an unseen edit on YouTube that will kind of change your life.

Behold:

Or not. 'Sup posted this amazing spoof a few days ago, which features "Golden Skans" set to a pretty gay '80s modern dance piece. It may be the funniest music-related YouTube post of all time. Once again, don't thank us.

Jarvs are still touring the world

Fuck yeah! In addition to playing the best Coachella line-up ever, 21st century dandy Jarvis Cocker has announced more U.S. dates!

04-23 New York, NY @ Webster Hall
04-27 Indio, CA @ Coachella Music and Arts Festival
04-28 San Francisco, CA @ Fillmore
04-30 Seattle, WA @ Showbox

Awesome. Here's a clip of the geezer on U.K. variety show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross from last month, performing his current single "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time".

We know, OMG. You can almost taste the incredibility. Pulp is one of our favorite bands of all time, and to be able to see Jarvis in the flesh is just too much for two slightly jaded NY music geeks to handle.

Here's an MP3 of "Big Stuff" a b-side off of "Don't Let Him..." and quite frankly one of the better Jarvis solo tracks (although, "Fat Children" remains our personal fave).
